5 Southwest Michigan women diagnosed with ocular syphilis after sexual contact with same man; US syphilis diagnoses up 80% since 2018.
5 women in southwest Michigan were diagnosed with ocular syphilis, a complication of the sexually transmitted disease, after experiencing eye problems within weeks of each other. All the women had sexual contact with the same man, who had a mostly asymptomatic syphilis infection. The cases highlight the potential for syphilis to cause blindness if left untreated and are part of a wider rise in syphilis diagnoses in the US, with over 207,000 Americans diagnosed in 2022, an 80% increase since 2018, and the highest levels since the 1950s.
