Michigan hunter mistakenly kills gray wolf in Lower Peninsula, first confirmed presence since early 20th century.

A Michigan hunter killed a gray wolf in January, mistaking it for a coyote during a legal coyote hunt. Genetic testing by the Department of Natural Resources later confirmed the animal was a gray wolf, marking the first time the species has been found in that part of the state since the early 20th century. Wolves were once present throughout Michigan but are now almost exclusively found in the Upper Peninsula. The presence of this gray wolf in Calhoun County, located in the Lower Peninsula, is being investigated by the DNR.
