The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits increased to a two-month high last week, despite labor market conditions remaining tight. The Labor Department's weekly claims report revealed a 9,000 rise in claims to 221,000 for the week ending March 30th, the highest level since late January. Though layoffs are increasing, they remain historically low. Economists attribute the rise in claims to an early Easter this year.
