UK's FTSE Small Cap Index may disappear by 2028 due to continued takeovers and weak IPO market.

Peel Hunt warns that the UK's FTSE Small Cap Index may cease to exist by 2028 if takeover activity continues and the IPO market fails to recover. The number of listed companies in the index fell from 160 in 2018 to 114 at the end of 2023, with a combined market capitalization of £29.4bn, less than half its 2018 peak of £57bn. The decline has been partly driven by takeovers and the trend has persisted in 2023.
