Scotland proposes a ban on enriched cage laying hens, with a potential full ban by 2034.

Scotland proposes a ban on caging laying hens, making it the first UK nation to do so. The consultation includes banning enriched cages from 2030 or a non-regulatory option where shops and caterers commit to stop selling and using eggs from birds kept in enriched cages by 2034. The Scottish Government's preference is for a ban on installing new cages from 2023, followed by a complete ban on keeping birds in enriched cages from 2034. Over 1.1 million hens are currently kept in "enriched cages" in Scotland.
