Royal Mail is investigating counterfeit barcoded stamps after customers complain of being fined £5 for receiving letters due to stamps deemed as fake. Some customers allege they bought stamps from legitimate Royal Mail sources, only to be charged a fine later. Royal Mail uses "specialist equipment" to ensure stamps are real and are verified using scanning devices at its sorting offices.
