Acclaimed French-language novelist Maryse Condé, known as the “Grande Dame” of Caribbean literature, has died at the age of 90. Born in Guadeloupe, Condé wrote numerous novels, stories, plays, and memoirs that redefined the personal and historical past of the Caribbean and beyond. Her work tackled colonialism and its impact on Western, African, and Caribbean cultures. Condé was the first and only winner of the New Academy Prize in Literature, which she received in 2018.
