US traffic deaths fell 3.6% in 2023, marking the second consecutive year of decline, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Despite the decrease, nearly 41,000 people still lost their lives on US roadways last year. This comes as Americans drove 67.5 billion more miles in 2023 than in 2022, a 2.1% increase. The death rate per 100 million miles driven dropped to 1.26 in 2023 from 1.33 in 2022, NHTSA said.
