San Diego County tracks gastrointestinal illnesses linked to raw sewage from Mexico, with school districts urging a sewage state of emergency.
San Diego County is tracking gastrointestinal illnesses linked to raw sewage flowing into South Bay waters from Mexico. The county will release weekly reports on stomach illnesses, and monthly updates on confirmed cases of communicable diseases such as hepatitis A, salmonellosis, and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. School districts near the California-Mexico border are urging authorities to declare a sewage state of emergency to safeguard students' health, as water tainted with untreated sewage from Mexico is flowing at 171 million gallons per day.
