Oregon Is Recriminalizing Drugs. Here’s What Portland Learned.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has signed a bill that reverses parts of the 2020 voter-approved initiative to decriminalize hard drugs. The new legislation re-criminalizes drug possession, introduces a new drug misdemeanor with different levels of jail time, and allows counties to decide whether to offer treatment over criminal charges. The law takes immediate effect, but the new criminal charges will come into force on September 1, providing time for the Oregon Justice Department to prepare.
