38-year-old Leah Makanda, originally from Newcastle and Maitland, is paralysed in Uganda after contracting malaria and a severe bacterial infection. Having lived in Uganda for about nine years, Leah has been helping the poor while living with Addison's disease. A GoFundMe campaign has been started by family friend Rod Marshdale to bring her back to Australia for treatment, as her condition is dire.
