Dr. John Nkengasong, who oversees the US' global AIDS effort, recalls the hope he saw through his office window in Africa before PEPFAR (President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) started in 2004. There were limited treatments and resources available at the time, but since the introduction of PEPFAR, the US program has transformed care in hard-hit countries and saved an estimated 25 million lives. Despite this, funding battles in Congress threaten the future of PEPFAR.
