Chinese state media has spread unsubstantiated rumours that Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen would flee in a US plane if war breaks out with China. An analysis by the Information Environment Research Center (IORG) revealed that these narratives originated from a Chinese Communist Party outlet in June 2021 and were later repeated by other official Chinese news sources. Taiwan has denied the reports, and there is no independent verification. The IORG analysis identified over 400 stories portraying Taiwan's military drills as rehearsals for the country's leadership to desert, suggesting a concerted effort by Beijing to undermine the ruling Democratic Progressive Party.
