The US aviation industry faces a growing maintenance worker shortage due to retirements and pandemic job changes, with a projected 40,000 technician deficit by 2028.

The US aviation industry faces a shortage of maintenance workers due to baby boomers retiring and others changing jobs during the pandemic. This shortage comes as the global commercial aircraft fleet is expected to grow by a third by 2034, involving over 36,400 vessels. The maintenance, repair, and overhaul market is projected to grow almost 20% by 2034. However, the industry currently lacks around 24,000 aviation maintenance technicians in North America, a figure that is expected to reach nearly 40,000 by 2028. The renowned Aviation High School in Long Island will not be able to fill this gap with its cohorts of 2,000 students.
