Wānaka's New World supermarkets defy Easter trading laws, remaining open without exemption or essential store status. Both stores had previously been fined for trading on Good Friday, and Wānaka is part of the Queenstown Lakes District Council, which has an exemption for Queenstown itself, but not for Wānaka. The supermarkets decided to stay open due to expected influx of tens of thousands of visitors during the holiday.
