Conservationists have installed a cat-proof fence on Mauna Kea to protect the endangered uau Hawaiian petrel seabird, rediscovered in 2021 after nearly 70 years. The fence, completed in March, surrounds 93 acres at a 9,000-foot elevation and was built in partnership with the University of Hawai'i at Hilo, Department of Land and Natural Resources, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services.
