California Sikhs participate in a referendum on Khalistan, an imagined homeland for some Sikhs dreaming of an independent state separate from India. The calls for independence have grown more urgent following a foiled assassination attempt of a Sikh activist in the US. The Sikh community in America, with an estimated half a million people, is voting on the matter at the Sacramento Gurdwara Bradshaw.
