2023 UK greenhouse gas emissions dropped 5.4% due to reduced gas use in electricity generation, with nuclear and renewables contributing 56.7% of electricity generation.
UK greenhouse gas emissions dropped by 5.4% in 2023 due to reduced gas use in electricity generation, the government said. The decline in energy demand is attributed to improved technology efficiency and a decrease in the importance of energy-intensive industries. High energy prices have reduced fuel consumption for building heating and industrial processes. Nuclear and renewable energy sources contributed 56.7% of electricity generation in 2023, up from 22.2% in 1990. UK emissions have dropped by 52.7% since 1990. However, emissions from transportation and buildings remain high.
