Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has unanimously approved a reduced fare program for low-income riders, allowing individuals earning 200% or less of the federal poverty level to have their fares halved. The initiative, set to be implemented by summer, could benefit around 62,000 train, bus and ferry riders, and 28,000 people who use the RIDE paratransit service. The program's cost is estimated to be at least $23 million for the fiscal year starting in July, with costs increasing to as much as $62 million per year by 2028.
