Heriot-Watt and Cambridge scientists develop astrocomb for Extremely Large Telescope, expanding exoplanet analysis beyond green-red spectrum.
Scientists at Heriot-Watt University and Cambridge University have developed an astrocomb, a laser system that analyses blue-green light emitted by stars. This technology, when used in the Extremely Large Telescope under construction in Chile, could potentially reveal Earth-like planets beyond our solar system. The breakthrough extends the analysis of exoplanets beyond the green-red part of the light spectrum, offering the opportunity to uncover more space secrets. The UK team will work on astrocombs for telescopes in South Africa and the Canary Islands.
