Convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh's lawyers request release of FBI statements on embezzlement to allow public trial.
Convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh's lawyers have requested the release of his statements to the FBI regarding embezzlement of millions of dollars from his clients and law firm in South Carolina. The lawyers argue that the statements should be released to allow people to judge the accusations, and propose that FBI agents could redact sensitive information before releasing them. Murdaugh's lawyers believe that if the FBI statements remain secret, a court hearing will have to be held behind closed doors, denying Murdaugh his rights to a public trial. Federal prosecutors estimate that Murdaugh stole over $12 million from clients and have yet to account for $6 million of it.
