A special CBI court in Lucknow convicted seven people in the 2005 murder of former BSP MLA Raju Pal, who was killed due to political rivalry with Atiq Ahmad's brother Ashraf, whom Pal defeated in the 2004 bypoll for the Prayagraj West seat. The CBI took over the investigation in 2016, and the Special Judge CBI found the accused guilty of criminal conspiracy and murder.
