California lawmakers propose a bill to enhance Holocaust survivors' and victims' efforts in recovering stolen art and property.
California lawmakers are set to introduce a bill to enhance efforts by Holocaust survivors, their heirs, and other victims in recovering art and other property stolen due to political persecution. The bill follows a U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that upheld California law, requiring a Madrid museum to retain an Impressionist masterpiece looted from a Jewish woman by the Nazis in 1939. Assemblyman Jesse Gabriel, who sponsored the bill, views it as an opportunity to correct a historical injustice.
