California introduces income-based utility fees, starting at $6 for very low-income households, in response to 2022 state legislation.

California has unveiled income-based utility fees as per a law passed by the state legislators in 2022. The fixed rate charges, designed to cover fixed costs like transmission and distribution infrastructure and wildfire costs, will start at $6 for very low-income households, $12 for low-income households, and $24.15 for moderate and higher-income households. The proposal aims to alleviate summer spikes in electricity bills and incentivize the use of clean energy by reducing electric rates for customers across the state.
