Assam extends AFSPA for six months in four districts based on law and order situation.
Assam extends Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) for six months in four districts: Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, and Sivasagar. The state government's Home and Political Department submitted a proposal to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, which, after considering the law and order situation, decided to maintain the 'disturbed area' status for an additional six-month period. AFSPA grants security forces sweeping powers to conduct operations and arrest individuals without prior warrants and provides them with certain levels of immunity in case of misplaced operations. The AFSPA has been periodically extended in Assam since it was declared a 'disturbed area' in November 1990.
