60-year-old Kevin Pearce, who cared for his dementia-suffering mother, is spared jail after admitting to manslaughter, receiving a two-year suspended sentence.

60-year-old Kevin Pearce, who cared for his 89-year-old dementia-suffering mother Eileen Pearce for 10 years, has been spared jail after admitting to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. The judge at the Old Bailey accepted Pearce's claim that he believed "death was the only solution" in the tragic case, but also stated that "mercy killing" was not acknowledged as a defence for homicide. Pearce was sentenced to two years in jail, suspended for two years.
