Volkswagen develops "RooBadge" technology, a deterrent device for kangaroos in Australia, to reduce on-road wildlife accidents.

Volkswagen has developed "RooBadge" technology, a deterrent device for kangaroos in Australia. The device, which looks like a regular Volkswagen badge, emits a mix of natural and artificial sounds to deter kangaroos. Kangaroos account for around 90% of on-road wildlife accidents in Australia, and the RooBadge aims to reduce this number. The technology was developed over a three-year period in collaboration with the University of Melbourne, WIRES wildlife rescue organization, and Volkswagen Australia, using advancements in car technology. The device is currently in the trial phase and plans to test it on kangaroos in the wild.
