Virginia's plan to relocate Washington Wizards and Capitals teams halted due to disagreements with Alexandria; D.C. Mayor and team owner finalize deal to keep teams until 2050.
Virginia's proposal for a new sports and entertainment district to relocate Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals teams has been halted due to disagreements between Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and the host city of Alexandria. The city expressed disappointment over failed negotiations, stating that any favorable consideration of the proposal would need to include substantial improvements to the existing transportation system, include affordable housing, and protect the city's AAA bond rating. Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Monumental Sports owner Ted Leonsis have finalized a deal to keep the Wizards and Capitals in Washington D.C.'s downtown area until 2050, pending approval from the DC Council.
