ASIRT found reasonable grounds that RCMP officers committed an offence in arresting a non-verbal autistic teenager, but Alberta Crown prosecutors recommended no charges.

Alberta's police watchdog, ASIRT, found reasonable grounds that RCMP officers committed an offence when they arrested a non-verbal autistic teenager at a playground in October 2022, but Alberta Crown prosecutors have recommended no charges against the officers. The investigation report by ASIRT reveals that RCMP received a 911 call about a person in the playground who may be on drugs. An officer recognized the license plate of a vehicle connected to a known drug user and thought the boy was this person. The boy was later handcuffed and taken to a detachment, where he was held down by officers and given a sedative.
