Vancouver police report a 76% drop in drug possession seizures after decriminalization in British Columbia.
Vancouver police report a "dramatic" drop in small drug seizures after decriminalization came into effect in British Columbia. During the first nine months of the program, officers seized no drugs under 2.5 grams, as per Health Canada's three-year exemption. All drug possession seizures, regardless of weight, dropped 76% in the city compared to the previous four-year average. The decriminalization exemption began January 31, 2023, and covers small amounts of opioids, including heroin and fentanyl, as well as cocaine, methamphetamine, and MDMA.
