Rutgers Health researchers discovered shared brain development mechanisms in autism types, correcting mTOR pathway defects with existing medications.

A study of different autism types found shared mechanisms in brain development, potentially responding to existing medications. Rutgers Health researchers transformed blood cells of people with genetic and unexplained autism into neural precursor cells, revealing defects in the mTOR pathway controlling structural proteins. The researchers corrected these issues and improved cell differentiation with existing drugs.
