Indonesia's agriculture ministry predicts a reduced rice surplus of 1.7 million metric tonnes in H1 2024 due to El Nino-driven drought.

Indonesia's agriculture ministry projects a narrowed rice surplus of 1.7 million metric tonnes in H1 2024, down from 3.36 million tonnes last year. The surplus was impacted by El Nino-driven drought, which delayed planting and hurt harvest in H2 2023, causing a deficit in January and February. Total rice output between Jan-June is expected to be 17.09 million tons, surpassing the 15.39 million ton demand.
