India plans to invest $3.7 billion to construct a 1,610-km fence along its border with Myanmar over the next decade, aiming to prevent smuggling and other illicit activities. The decision follows the end of a long-standing visa-free movement policy and is due to national security concerns and maintaining the demographic structure of India's northeastern region. The project, which requires cabinet approval, also includes the construction of parallel roads and 1,700 km of feeder roads connecting military bases to the border. The cost of the fence is estimated to be nearly 125 million rupees per km, more than double the cost of the border fence with Bangladesh built in 2020.
