High levels of E.coli found in River Thames ahead of Oxbridge Boat Race; New safety guidelines issued due to elevated bacteria levels. E.coli levels, which should be below 1,000 CFU per 100ml to meet Environment Agency standards, were recorded at 9,801 CFU per 100ml. Rowers have been advised not to enter the water and to cover any cuts, grazes or blisters. The traditional celebration of jumping into the river will not be advised, and rowers will be encouraged to wash themselves down at a dedicated cleansing station at the finish line.
