Auckland Mayor demands government pay rates on its properties, estimating $36m yearly contribution.

Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown has demanded the government pay rates on its properties in the city, estimating that it could bring in over $36m a year for New Zealand's largest city. Brown also called for the government to return GST paid on Aucklanders' rates to the council, which he claims would lead to a 15% decrease in ratepayers' bills instead of a potential 7.5% increase. The mayor claims central government uses city infrastructure without paying the associated rates.
