2023 study suggests black heart transplant candidates face lower acceptance odds than white patients, raising concerns for potential racial bias.

A new study led by Indiana University School of Medicine researchers suggests that black patients in need of a heart transplant may be less likely to receive one than white patients. The study, published in JAMA, analyzed data from the United Network for Organ Sharing about patients listed for a heart transplant in the US from October 2018 to March 2023. Researchers found that the odds of acceptance were higher for white candidates than black candidates, and were also higher for women than for men. The study raises concerns about possible racial and gender bias in the decision-making process for heart transplants.
