Indonesia investigates possible existence of extinct Javan tiger based on 2019 genetic traces.

Indonesia is investigating the possibility of the Javan tiger, considered extinct since the 1980s, still being alive in the wild. Scientists from Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency and conservationists discovered genetic traces of the Javan tiger in a single hair found near a West Java village in 2019. The Environment and Forestry Ministry is conducting further research and tests, setting up camera traps and collecting community data. If the Javan tiger is confirmed to still exist, it will be declared a protected animal.
