A major geomagnetic storm, the best in 7 years, lit up southern New Zealand, allowing people to witness the Aurora Australis overnight. The storm was caused by the Sun ejecting material towards Earth, which interacted with our magnetic fields and made the atmosphere glow. The best viewing time for the auroras is between 10pm and 2am, as the storm begins to fade.
