8.3% increase in food safety complaints reported by FSAI in 2023, with high instances of poor hygiene, unfit food, and suspected food poisoning.
Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) reported an 8.3% increase in complaints in 2023, with a total of 7,732 cases. Consumers complained about poor hygiene standards (31.9%), unfit food (27.2%), and suspected food poisoning (26.7%). Examples of unfit food included a snail in coleslaw, dead mouse in strawberries, and a stone in black pudding. FSAI chief executive, Pamela Byrne, said these reports help identify potential threats to public health and reflect growing awareness of the public's right to safe food.
