2023 first-time asylum applications in EU increased by 20% to 1,048,900 compared to 2022, with Syria being the main country of citizenship for asylum seekers since 2013 and accounting for 17% of total applications. Afghanistan is the second leading country of citizenship with 10% of applications. Asylum applications from Turkey, Venezuela, and Colombia also significantly contributed to the total.
