Consol Energy Inc. staged a mock emergency at Harvey Mine BMX Portal to test response teams' preparedness for real mine disasters. The drill simulated a fire caused by a diesel spill, trapping 170 miners 500 feet underground. The exercise aimed to practice coordinating all aspects of a rescue operation, including communication and learning from mistakes to improve preparedness. All miners were rescued, with four sustaining injuries.
