New York City's celebrity owl, Flaco, had severe pigeon herpesvirus and high levels of rat poison when he died after crashing into a building last month, according to the Bronx Zoo. The Eurasian eagle-owl, who gained fame after escaping the Central Park Zoo and living in the urban wilds for over a year, had the virus from eating feral pigeons and was exposed to four different types of rat poison. These factors, along with the initial traumatic injury, contributed to his death.
