Malaysia completes engagement sessions on proposed Syariah Courts Act amendments to increase penalties for shariah criminal offences.

Malaysia completes engagement sessions on proposed Syariah Courts Act amendments, aiming to increase penalties for shariah criminal offences, including insulting religion. States will have flexibility to modify their laws and enactments to widen punishment scope. Current max penalties are up to 3 years imprisonment, RM5k fine, or 6 whippings. Amendments, last revised in 1984, would only affect Muslims; non-Muslims face action from police and civil courts.
