Historical marker unveiled for 1961 Black Nite Uprising, an early LGBTQ rights victory, in Milwaukee.
The Wisconsin Historical Society and the William G. Pomeroy Foundation unveiled a historical marker in Milwaukee to commemorate the Black Nite Uprising, an early LGBTQ rights victory in 1961. The event occurred at a gay bar when servicemen attempted to intimidate patrons, leading to a fightback and the arrest of the servicemen. The marker is part of an initiative to recognize the history of marginalized communities in Wisconsin and contributed to Milwaukee's first law against sexual orientation discrimination in 1982.
