Assam CM Sarma requires Bengali-speaking Muslims to abandon child marriage, polygamy, and promote women's education to be recognized as indigenous.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that Bengali-speaking Muslims must forsake practices like child marriage and polygamy to be considered 'khilonjiya' indigenous people of the state. Sarma previously held the Bengali-speaking Muslim community responsible for these social evils. To be recognized as indigenous, the community must abandon child marriage, polygamy, and encourage women's education, according to Sarma.
