16-year-old Alaina Miller and her mother convinced View Royal council in BC to pilot bear-proof garbage cans, following a mother bear's shooting, to prevent human-wildlife conflicts.

16-year-old Alaina Miller and her mother Andrea successfully convinced View Royal council in British Columbia to implement a pilot project for bear-proof garbage cans in their neighborhood. This comes after a mother black bear was shot by conservation officers last year, leaving three orphaned cubs. The pilot project, supported by education and a policy advising residents to store garbage securely, aims to prevent human-wildlife conflicts and could make View Royal the first municipality in the Capital Region to implement curb-side bear-proof receptacles.
