Spanish researchers link "junk proteins" accumulation to aging and ALS, finding ribosomal proteins hinder motor neuron function.
Researchers at the Spanish National Cancer Research Center have linked the accumulation of "junk proteins" to aging and a possible cause of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The study published in Molecular Cell reveals that the non-functional proteins, ribosomal proteins, normally form ribosomes but accumulate in motor neurons, hindering cell function. This discovery could open new avenues for understanding ALS and aging processes.
