Pentagon IG report reveals AFMES retained organs without family consent, prompting DoD to modernize medical examiner tracking system.

The report found a lack of consistent procedures for handling and storing organs, indicating that officials may not be able to effectively answer families' questions, which "could cause emotional distress." In response, the Department of Defense is now working to modernize and analyze its medical examiner's tracking system.
