New research from Leiden University links microplastics and nanoplastics in artery plaque to a higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and death. A study involving 257 patients found microplastics mainly from polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride in high-risk patients, and those with plastics in their plaque showed increased inflammation in their genes. This adds to the growing body of evidence linking microplastics to health risks.
