Canadian National Security advises military to halt counter-intelligence investigative searches of workplace computers due to privacy concerns.
The Canadian National Security and Intelligence Review Agency has advised the country's military to halt counter-intelligence investigative searches of workplace computer systems, due to concerns over employee privacy. The report states that Defence employees and Armed Forces members have a reasonable expectation of privacy when using work computers for personal reasons, and the unit's electronic search practices lacked legal oversight, potentially capturing intimate and personal information protected by the Charter of Rights. The watchdog recommends suspending counter-intelligence searches until a legal authority is established.
